A review by former 3/9 Marine Walt Neller

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to let you all know about a book I just finished reading, “Con Thien Hill of Angels” by James P. Coan, he was a tank platoon leader who arrived in Con Thien just prior to our visit in September 1967.  It is an extremely well written book that goes from the roots of the conflict, NVA strategies, US strategies and the strategic value of Con Thien and it’s surrounding areas.  It does not just include Con Thien itself but chronicles the ground conflicts in the area that were required to support the base.  At no point does Mr. Coan blow his own horn or have an axe to grind, he just states the facts and describes the events, it is a hard read as he is graphic in his detail.  He does a very good job of tying all action in around the Con Thien area together, which a lot of us were unaware of, it’s a read that is well worth the effort.  There’s even an excerpt in the book of one our own “Wild Bill” aka “Crunch.”

Please forward this e-mail to your main e-mail lists as mine is somewhat anemic.  Anyone who served in the 9th, 4th, 3rd, 26th, Marines, as well as supporting arty groups at that time would also find this book interesting as they were all involved.  This book has been written by one of us and is a no nonsense book worth reading,  Thanks Mr. Coan!  Hope this finds all you well!
